SYSTEMIC CHANGE TOWARD A CITY WHERE BLACK BOYS AND MEN ARE SEEN AS FULLY HUMAN AND VALUED ASSETS TO THRIVING COMMUNITIES

WHAT IS DEHUMANIZATION?

Forward Promise is a national program that supports culturally- responsive practices that buffer the effects of historical and systemic trauma on boys and young men of color. In their extensive research, dehumanization is defined as a process by which an individual or group’s full humanity is denied either through perceptions of that individual or group or through actual treatment.

In 2019, MetroMorphosis convened stakeholders from law enforcement, government, education, mental health, faith-based organizations, and community-based organizations to gain a deeper understanding of dehumanization and how it manifests in Baton Rouge. Stakeholders identified examples of dehumanization in the home and school. in the media, in city infrastructure, and in business and recreation landscapes. These areas became the basis of our work to disrupt dehumanization in Baton Rouge.
