As we kick off Black Philanthropy Month, we invite you to join us in celebrating the exceptional generosity and invaluable contributions of the Black community. This month is dedicated to recognizing and honoring the diverse forms of philanthropy that strengthen and uplift our communities.
Understanding Philanthropy
While philanthropy is traditionally considered an opportunity and distinction reserved for the wealthy, at its core, philanthropy can be practiced by anyone regardless of income level. In fact, when you truly grasp the essence of philanthropy, you begin to see philanthropy through a more equitable lens, acknowledging the rich contributions made by Black Americans to build vibrant and thriving communities.
Philanthropy encompassess the giving of time, talent, and treasure. As ULDI Alum, Lauren Crump reminds us, philanthropy doesn’t suggest a certain amount. Instead, it embodies a love for humanity. This love for humanity can be seen throughout the history of Black communities and continues today.
Black Philanthropy Month
We recognize the fullness of philanthropy while also acknowledging the disparity in the financial resources that both make Black philanthropy necessary and possible. According to the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, Black households donate a significant portion of their income to charitable causes, totaling an estimated $11 billion annually. This generosity outpaces other racial groups, despite Black Americans holding less wealth on average. Additionally, a 2018 report by the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy found that 25% of Black households give more than $1,500 annually, demonstrating a strong commitment to philanthropy.
Black Philanthropy Month, founded in 2011 by Dr. Jacqueline Copeland-Carson and the Pan-African Women’s Philanthropy Network, is a global celebration of African-descent giving. The month of August is dedicated to uplifting Black philanthropists and their contributions to social change.
Despite facing systemic barriers, the Black community continues to give generously, contributing significantly to causes that promote social justice, education, and community development.
This generosity is much needed as it fills the gap between what Black led organizations receive and leverage for impact versus their white-led counterparts.
Black Philanthropy Fund
To help fill this gap, we are excited to announce the launch of the Black Philanthropy Fund, a dedicated pool of resources aimed at bridging economic gaps in urban communities by providing funding for organizations and groups leading transformative work.
We will focus our giving on critical areas such as leadership, business, community revitalization, and organizational sustainability. Our goal is to raise and distribute funds to organizations and groups leading innovative efforts impacting our community. True equity goes beyond words, and this fund aims to embody the spirit of equity and inclusion, ensuring that urban communities continue to thrive and grow.
